Between Sets: Your 4-Week Framework

Here's exactly what happens in our four weeks together

WEEK 0: Before We Start

You'll complete a simple intake form so I have the basics before we meet—your surf background, what you're working on, and what brought you to Sea State.
I'll introduce you to your Notion dashboard (where all call replays will be delivered to you and all Sea State materials will be stored).

WEEK 1: IMMERSE — Meeting You Where You Are

60-minute 1:1 call

This is where we actually meet. Not the polished version of you, but the real one. We talk about your surf story, what you're working on, what lights you up in the water, and what you're ready to shift. This isn't the deep dive yet—it's me getting to know YOU (and a chance to check in with your own self too! When do we get the chance in our buys lives to get to do that). Your energy, your patterns, your goals, your current relationship with the ocean.
After this call: You'll complete your personalized Flow State Workbook (73 questions designed to pull everything out of you—the dreams, the blocks, the voice in your head, the surfer you're becoming). This is your deep work between Week 1 and Week 2—getting radically honest about where you are and who you're becoming.
You'll walk away with: Clarity on what we're actually working on together, feeling seen and understood, and your workbook to complete before Week 2.

WEEK 2: ALCHEMIZE — Facing Your Fears + Blue Mind Protocols

60-minute 1:1 call

Now we go deep. We dive into your Flow State Workbook together—where you actually are (not where you think you should be), what you're afraid of in the water, and the stories you're telling yourself that keep you stuck. We turn self-doubt into self-trust.
Here's the thing: we have to name our fears to face them. We're turning your fear into fire. Whether it's fear of bigger waves, fear of looking stupid, fear of taking up space, fear of being judfed, fear of never being "good enough," fear of your body failing you—we're naming it, understanding where it lives in your nervous system, and designing your personal practices to shift it. We also talk about Blue Mind and how powerful water is for regulating your nervous system.
Blue Mind is the research term for what happens to your brain when you're near water—your brainwaves literally shift from stressed beta (fight/flight/freeze) to creative alpha (flow/presence). That's why the ocean feels like coming home—neurologically, you ARE.

What you'll learn:

  • How to use water to regulate your nervous system BEFORE you paddle out (not just hoping it happens)
  • Pre-surf rituals that ground you and set you up for success
  • Practices that works IN the water, not just on your yoga mat
  • How to read your body's signals—knowing when you're activated vs actually unsafe
  • Practices for after a session so you're building resilience, not just surviving
You'll walk away with: Your personalized Blue Mind regulation practice, clarity on what's actually blocking you (it's almost never what you think it is), understanding of how your fears show up in your body, and practices to alchemize fear into power. Self doubt is getting called out because in Week 3 self trust is building in its place.

WEEK 3: REVIEW — Clip Review, Personalized Technique + Routines (Rituals)

60-minute 1:1 call

This is where we see what's actually happening in the water.
You'll submit clips from your local break, and we'll review them together during this 1:1 session. I'll break down your technique, your patterns, your energy—how you paddle out, how you position yourself in the lineup, how you make decisions, how your body moves. This is where theory meets practice.
But we don't stop at technique. We also talk about the practical stuff that sets you up for long-term success: what surfboard and gear actually works for YOUR body and skill level, your LIFESTYLE, how to build rituals that make showing up easier (pre-surf routines, post-surf practices), and the logistics that remove friction so you can actually get in the water consistently.
We can also review clips of your favorite surfer or my own surfing—whatever would be most helpful to you.
You'll walk away with: Clear technique focus areas, personalized gear recommendations, a ritual framework that makes surfing feel easier, and practical systems that remove the barriers between you and the water.
Throughout the entire 4 weeks: Remember, you can DM me on Instagram or WhatsApp anytime with questions, wins, or to submit clips for feedback. I'm available to support you between our calls.

WEEK 4: INTEGRATION — Group Coaching, Future Self Vision + Advanced Technique

90-120 minute group call

This is where everything comes together.
Integration Circle (30-45 min): Everyone shares what's shifted in the past three weeks—what's working, what's still coming up, the breakthroughs and the blocks. You realize you're not alone in what you're working through. You see patterns in others that illuminate your own.
Future Self Vision Work (30-45 min): We work together on who you're becoming as a surfer, your long-term practice framework, and how to keep this momentum going. This is where you get so clear on your why, so devoted to your practice, so in touch with your body, so in love with surfing that performing isn't even on your mind anymore.
Advanced Technique Q&A with Timmy Reyes (30 min): Timmy's my husband and a world championship-level surfer. He's also in touch with his feminine side enough to be allowed in this space. He brings a completely different technical lens—especially for reading complex conditions, progressing to bigger waves, and refining mechanics. This is where you get to ask the questions you didn't even know you had.

Meet Maddy — Your Surf Mentor

Marine biologist who learned the hard way that your body is wiser than your ego.

I'm not a typical surf coach because I didn't come to this work through athleticism or achievement. I came to it through breakdown and rebuilding.

I grew up longboarding. I have a board sponsor. I've competed in longboard competitions and I learned to shortboard from professional surfers (literally - all my friends + mentors are or were competitors in the WSL). I can teach you all the longboard techniques — cross-stepping, nose riding, hanging five, turns. Plus, I know exactly what fundamentals matter for progressing in shortboarding.

But here's the truth: I'm also a marine biologist, artist, photographer, and integrative surf mentor who's done underwater research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying kelp forests + coral reefs around the world. I lived on my sailboat in San Diego for 10 years, sailing around the Pacific and traveling the globe in search of empty waves with my husband Timmy Reyes. I spent most of my life on the go, never slowing down enough to be present for my life - never able to really enjoy it.

And then everything changed: I was diagnosed with a chronic health condition.

Living with chronic pain forced me to completely transform my relationship with surfing and with life. I couldn't perform anymore. I couldn't chase validation or show off or push through pain to prove something. My body literally wouldn't let me.

And that's when I actually learned how life-changing surfing really is.

I had to get out of my head and into my body. I had to learn nervous system regulation techniques — not as abstract concepts, but as survival tools. I had to stop treating the ocean as a performance arena and start treating it as medicine. I had to stop being hard on myself and start actually having fun.

Here's what I discovered: the ocean doesn't need saving. We do.

My work as a marine scientist showed me that water is the most neurologically advantageous environment for nervous system regulation. When you're in it, your brain shifts from stressed beta waves to creative alpha waves. Problem-solving increases 60%. Cortisol drops. You literally access flow state.

I used it to heal. I used it to rebuild my relationship with my body, with surfing, with myself.

I got so clear on my why. So devoted to my practice. So in touch with my body. So in love with surfing that performing wasn't even on my mind anymore. It wasn't even a priority.

And that's when everything shifted — not just in the water, but in my entire life. Slowing down helped me speed up my recovery. Instead of comparing myself to anyone else, I started entering the water with gratitude + presence.

Sea State exists because I refuse to separate technique from nervous system work. Drawing from my training in yoga, breathwork, mindfulness-based practices, and somatic embodiment - I refuse to treat your body as a machine that just needs better mechanics when what you actually need is regulation, presence, and permission to surf like yourself.

Yes, I can teach you the technical stuff — the cross-steps, the nose rides, the fundamentals that matter. But it's not just about "hotdogging." It's about flow. And that's the most valuable thing you'll learn in Sea State. Because surfing isn't about forcing it... it's about STYLE, and that only comes from a deep connection to the water + your own creativity.

FAQ'S

I'm planning a surf trip/retreat. Should I do this first?

YES. I've been there—spending $4k on a boat trip and $2k on flights to chase perfect waves, only to get stuck in my head the entire time. Or paddle out in a crowded lineup and freeze. Or watch other people catch wave after wave while I hesitate. Or putting so much pressure on myself to get clips that I end up with none.. The worst feeling is traveling to your dream destination and realizing your technique isn't the problem—your nervous system is. Sea State prepares you for those moments. You'll learn how to regulate in unfamiliar breaks, how to handle crowded lineups without shutting down, and how to actually show up for the waves you traveled so far to surf. Do this work BEFORE you drop thousands on a trip. Your future self will thank you.

Do I need to be at a certain skill level to work with you?

No. I've worked with everyone from women who've been surfing their whole life but feel stuck, to newer surfers building strong foundations. What matters is you're ready to look at surfing as a practice of coming home to yourself, not just checking off skills.

What if I don't live near the ocean or can't surf regularly during our four weeks?

While you'll get the most out of this if you can surf at least once a week during our time together, we can adapt the framework to your situation. The nervous system work and mental shifts happen regardless of wave count—and often, the insight sessions create the biggest breakthroughs. Honestly even if you are just thinking about surfing, this will help you build confidence to actually start!

How is this different from regular surf lessons?

Traditional surf instruction focuses almost exclusively on technique—pop-up mechanics, paddling form, wave counting. “Paddle paddle paddle!” “Bend your knee!” “Move your arms!” haha. Sea State addresses technique too, but we start with your nervous system and inner world, because that's actually what's running the show. You get personalized mentorship that bridges neuroscience, embodiment, AND skill development. Plus you're working with someone who learned these practices through necessity not just theory.

What if I'm not "good enough" yet?

This belief right here—this is exactly what we'll work on. You're already good enough. You're ready now. The surfer you're becoming isn't somewhere far away—they're you, just regulated, embodied, and trusting yourself.

What are Blue Mind protocols exactly?

What's the private IG group chat like? And what if I don't have IG?

It's your crew. The women who get it. A place to share sessions, ask questions, coordinate surf meetups, celebrate wins, work through blocks. It's not me coaching 24/7—it's genuine community with other women building the same practice. Plus we get to support each other with likes and comments on our content and share things we are working on outside of surfing. And it's yours forever.

Who is Timmy and why does he do the advanced Q&A?

Timmy Reyes is my husband and has surfed at the highest level. He brings a completely different technical perspective and skillset than I do—especially for barrel riding, advanced maneuvers, reading complex wave conditions, and progressing to bigger waves. The Q&A in Week 4 gives you access to both of our expertise. (Plus I’ll relay any advanced questions to him throughout our time together.)

I also deal with chronic pain/health issues. Will this work for me?

This might work better for you than anyone else. I built this entire framework while learning to work WITH my body instead of against it. The nervous system regulation techniques, the focus on listening to capacity instead of pushing through, the emphasis on quality over quantity—all of this came from necessity.
